PKR leader Rafizi Ramli today gave a statement to police on earlier remarks about Rosmah Mansor’s jewellery collection.

The PKR vice-president’s statement was recorded at the Sentul police station at 10am today.

Rafizi, the former Pandan MP, said he was being investigated for criminal slander under Section 5 of the Penal Code and also Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

The speech was recorded under Section 122 of the Criminal Procedure Code, said his lawyer, Ashraf Othman, who accompanied his client today.

Rosmah, wife of former prime minister Najib Razak, lodged a report against Rafizi shortly after the 14th general election on May 9.

Rafizi said previously he was happy that the police are doing their duty irrespective of the government of the day.

“This is what that is supposed to happen. All police reports, no matter from whom, the rich or poor, the ones who won the general election or lost should be investigated.

“It may sound weird but I am happy when I was called by the police this time to give my statement. It means the police are learning to be independent and not follow political will.”

He added that he chose to not to seek advice from anyone, be it ministers or his legal team, to prove to critics in PAS and Umno that the law should not be synonymous with the government of the day.

“I put my freedom on the line at the will of the judges, according to the law not to imprison me.

“Last June 1, the judge did not agree to that and I was supposed to be in jail.

“I did not enter the reformasi movement for 20 years just to do the same (get involved in the judiciary) when Pakatan Harapan is in power.” – July 13, 2018.

  • Good on you Rafizi, your intelligence, courage and dogged determination to expose the wrongdoings of the rich and the mighty despite the cost sets you apart as an altruist and a champion of the people. Rosmah's report against you will surely crumple now that the truth is out but this will be a test of the independence of our judiciary in the post-BN era.
