MALAYSIANS need to be patient with the new Pakatan Harapan government if they make unpopular decisions, said deputy minister Hannah Yeoh today.

Yeoh, who is deputy women, family and community development minister, said such unpopular decisions were part of the new government’s long-term plan to fix the country.

Although she did not give an example of what could be a unpopular decision, Yeoh cited the imbalance between the ministry’s welfare budget and the People’s Aid Scheme (BR1M).

The welfare budget was only RM2 billion but RM6 billion was allocated for BR1M under the previous Barisan Nasional government.

“The total government spending for welfare nationwide is RM2 billion. But, how much is spent on BR1M?

“It is about three times more than is spent for welfare. Total of RM6 billion for BR1M. This is not right. This is something we need to fix,” Yeoh said tonight in a fundraising dinner for Tabung Harapan.

“Actions taken by the new government might not be popular but it will be necessary. Please bear with us.

“When the government comes forward to announce the decisions. It will be important to listen to the information to give a better understanding on why (it is being made),” Yeoh said.

The new PH administration announced in May that BR1M will be replaced by Bantuan Sara Hidup Malaysia (Cost of Living Aid). – July 6, 2018.

  • In the meantime ensure that the have-nots amongst us will be taken care of, in every town like Najib did in 2016 with his Anjung Singgah-concept 1/2 way house-like transit home for the homeless & needy almost opposite the KL Hospital in Jalan Pahang (which actually needs overall improvement). I paid them a visit & was told the food does not come regularly, which is very bad as these destitutes are dependent on it. A govt dietician should also draw up a proper menu for a balanced diet, and ensure a good multivitamin is available as an essential top-up item, besides other things. The open grassy space behind this transit home has a lot of litter which must be tidied up & the grass cut regularly..

  • Hangouts should be stop, bring down the cost of living especially food and property Is more important so that the people can afford to buy or spend and this will create economic growth. Blacklisting of the people will make things worse.
