THE Malaysian Insight goes live today, after about a year of planning and getting people to share our vision of what journalism is in a country of controlled news, sensational headlines and an active social media that picks and chooses, cuts and pastes, spins and spews what it calls news.
Or “alternative facts” as coined by United States counsellor to the President Kellyanne Conway in January when she defended White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s false statement about the attendance at Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States.
The more cynical among us will say Malaysia created alternative facts long before Conway used the phrase. And the sceptical will wonder the reasons for another news portal in Malaysia.
This much I can tell you, my colleagues and I are invested in this country as much as most Malaysians are and want to have a portal and platform for a fair exchange of ideas and information.
Ultimately and essentially, it is about Malaysia. We have experienced and fresh journalists, most of whom have worked with me in another portal that met its demise about the same time last year.
Which brings me to the point of it all. We seek to inform and explain, fact check and illuminate the narratives of the country and the issues which have been overshadowed by the daily headlines.
We seek to use the latest technology to provide visual and data-driven reports, insightful analyses and commentaries on a Malaysia that is a far cry from the dreams of those who fought for Merdeka and Malaysia.
The Malaysian Insight is not about saving journalism or jobs, it is about informing Malaysians on the relevant goings-on and issues of the day and those forgotten by the sands of time.
We will have a paywall eventually because you pay to be informed and get it free to be influenced. News is not about clickbait headlines, processing press statements or taking public pronouncements at face value. It is about tireless and diligent investigations and fact-checking.
Meanwhile, sign up and read The Malaysian Insight to know more about issues of the day that matter to the wider public, not just the mandarins and millionaires in Kuala Lumpur who think they know better for Malaysia. – March 31, 2017.
