FUGITIVE Umno leader Jamal Md Yunos was today charged with escaping from custody and was denied bail by the Ampang Magistrate Court.

“The court has decided to refuse bail,” said magistrate Mohd Firdaus Sadina Ali who who set July 30 for mention and handover of court documents.

Jamal’s lawyer Izzat Amri said the Red Shirts leader had been taken to the Sungai Buloh prison where he would be detained.

Jamal was extradited from Indonesia today. Upon arrival at 2.50pm at the KLIA, he was immediately whisked to court for a remand hearing.

He was escorted to the courthouse at 3.55pm in handcuffs, wearing a black hoodie and jeans.

He pleaded not guilty when the charge was read out to him.

Deputy public prosecutor Faten Hadni Kahiruddin told the court that Jamal should be denied bail even though it is a bailable offence.

“If he is given bail, what guarantee can we get that he would not be a flight risk because he already escaped before.

“He did not cooperate with the police and fled to Indonesia where he had to be extradited back.”

Izzat said that his client has no intention to run away and break the law.

“The fact that he ran away was inaccurate. He thought that he had posted bail and that was why he left.

“Our client will corporate and even go to the police station daily. I’m confident he will not run away from the charges.”

Jamal then ask the magistrate permission to address the court which was granted.

He said that he ran away because his house was raided by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission on May 26 and he feared political persecution.

“I thought that after signing the release documents for bail that I was free to go.

“Then there was also a change of government,” Jamal said.

Jamal had left Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital on May 25.

He then fled to Indonesia where he remained for more than a month.

Jamal said that he was in Sumatra and was about to go an give himself up at the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta when he was caught.

“I had a horrible experience in Indonesia it’s was nightmare during my month one there.”

Jamal also pleaded with the court to grant bail because he is not well and has issues with his back.

“I hope to get bail as I can’t sleep on the floor,” he said. – July 5, 2018.
