THE number of fatal accidents in Sabah over the Hari Raya holidays had been reduced by more than half.
Sabah Police Commissioner Ramli Din today said the state saw a 55% reduction in fatal accidents from last year’s 22 to a mere 10 this year, adding that they mostly involved motorcyclists.
This was despite the state reporting a record 13,121 traffic summonses during Ops Selamat, a 15% increase from 11,453 tickets last year.
The summonses were issued in the two-week operation from June 19 until July 2.
“So most of it are regular offences as many drivers can’t wait to get to their destinations to celebrate Hari Raya,” he said.
Ramli said police had also recovered three stolen motorcycles and arrested a drug addict during the operation, which focused on 30 black spots or accident prone areas in the state. – July 3, 2017.
