UMNO presidential candidate Khairy Jamaluddin has vowed to defend the party from deregistration, adding he was willing to meet anyone to save the party.
The outgoing Umno Youth chief said if he was elected, he would face anyone necessary, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, police, home minister, or even the prime minister himself.
“We are not sure if it’s true but there is talk that Umno may be deregistered. If I am president, I will meet and debate with whoever necessary to make sure Umno is not touched and its assets are returned.
“I will face them. I will speak to Tun (Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) and ask him not to deregister Umno,” he said during a meeting last night with Penang Umno members in Seberang Jaya ahead of the party polls on Saturday.
“I will ask (the prime minister) that we be allowed to fight as gentlemen, and there is no need to abolish Umno. After that, we focus on strengthening the party.”
Khairy, who is former youth and sports minister, is running against four others for the presidency, including acting president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and veteran Umno politician Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
Yesterday, Zahid said it was possible that Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin would order the Registrar of Society to deregister Umno soon.
He said this after being informed by MACC that the bank accounts of Umno headquarters and several of its states had been frozen.
Zahid said this would disrupt Umno’s operations and hamper its efforts to rebuild itself after its worst general election outing and loss of power in Putrajaya.
But Bernama reported that Muhyiddin had refuted Zahid’s allegation that RoS would be ordered to cancel Umno’s registration.
Khairy said it was sad that the first circular received at the divisions since they elected their leaders was one saying that administration funds or aid would no longer be sent to the divisions from Umno headquarters.
“We have to reorganise our assets so we can cut expenses at (Umno’s headquarters at) PWTC. We can then channel our assets to the divisions so they can conduct activities which can win us support.
“It is those in the grassroots that work to engage the people, like our women and Puteri wings,” he said. – June 29, 2018
