FORMER police commando Sirul Azhar Umar, who was convicted of the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu, has sent a private letter to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The letter was sent through former Batu Kawan Umno chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who visited the convicted killer at the Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney, Australia, today.
Khairuddin said he had a one-and-half-hour meeting with Sirul Azhar at the detention centre.
“It was during this meeting that Sirul Azhar handed me the letter for Dr Mahathir. I don’t know the contents of the letter,” Khairuddin said in a statement today.
He said Sirul Azhar, who fled Malaysia in 2013, had also hinted at his readiness to cooperate fully with the Malaysian authorities due to his trust in the Pakatan Harapan government.

On June 20, Altantuya’s father, Setev Shaariibuu, had met Dr Mahathir at his office in Putrajaya.
The Shaariibuu family’s lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, said the prime minister believed there were strong grounds to reopen her murder case but that all efforts to do so must follow the rule of law.
Ramkarpal said Dr Mahathir directed for all credible evidence to be presented to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action.
Setev had also lodged a report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters calling for the authorities to delve deeper into the role played by Senior Assistant Commissioner Musa Safri in his daughter’s murder.
He also met Attorney-General Tommy Thomas to urge him to reopen investigations.
Altantuya, 28, was shot dead before the body was blown up in a jungle in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, in 2006.
Sirul Azhar and Azilah Hadri – who were once former prime minister Najib Razak’s bodyguards – were found guilty of her murder and sentenced to death in 2015.
Sirul is in Australian custody. Azilah is in Kajang prison. – June 28, 2018.
