PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the East Coast Railway Line (ECRL) project will go on if the renegotiated terms favour Malaysia.

The Pakatan Harapan and Bersatu chairman said the cost negotiated by the previous Barisan Nasional government was too high, and required a review.

“All these terms need to be renegotiated. If we get better terms, of course we will continue,” he said during a press conference at the Bersatu headquarters today.

He said the project should not cost RM55 billion, and its tenders should not favour only Chinese construction companies.

“We do not think it should cost RM55 billion. A lot of things are being done wrong.

“Contracts (are) given to Chinese companies with workers from China. So, what is there for Malaysia?”

Two days ago, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said the project would go on as Malaysia remained committed to renegotiating the pricing of China’s landmark One Belt, One Road ‎project in Malaysia.

Various estimates have shown that the China-backed ECRL could be built for less than RM40 billion, but its cost had been inflated to between RM60 billion and RM70 billion. – June 25, 2018.
