THE Kajang magistrate’s court has rejected an application for a remand order for prominent lawyer and activist Siti Kasim.

Clad in the orange jumpsuit worn by those in lock-up, Siti was also in handcuffs when she was escorted by five policemen to the court earlier today.

A dozen lawyers, including activist and lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan and Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah, were awaiting her arrival.

Ambiga told reporters after the court hearing that the judge had rejected the application for her remand order, adding there were 12 lawyers representing Siti in the case.

Siti was arrested at home late yesterday, accused of kidnapping her client who was in hospital being treated for injuries believed to have been sustained from attacks by her mother.

Earlier, Selangor CID chief Assistant Commissioner Fadzil Ahmat confirmed Siti and her client Anis Izatty Ruslan were both arrested and brought to the Kajang police headquarters last night.

A video clip shared on Facebook by Suri Kempe, the programme manager at Muslim rights group Musawah, showed a police officer informing Siti she was under arrest for the abduction of Anis from a hospital, where she was being treated, under Section 186 of the Penal Code.

In the video, Siti tells another person Anis’ mother had lodged a police report claiming her daughter was mentally unstable and had been abducted by Siti from hospital.

“The police are arresting me because they are following procedure. They know about this story that Anis was abused by her mother and I was trying to save the girl. The girl willingly followed me,” Siti said to the friend.

Anis is seen in the same video saying she was not kidnapped “She did not kidnap me. It is a lie,” Anis said. – June 24, 2018.

  • The Home Minister must not allow this ala umno/bn high handedness of treating citizens. This is blatant abuse of powers. It is a very small family issue blown out of proportion just because some holier than thou species in the religious body is trying to impose their values on others and try to play God. The new govt. must not condone such Talibanism to flourish or it would have been a wasted effort voting them into Putrajaya.

  • This is unacceptable. Police must not abuse their power. They are not above the law. Where can you simply remand a person? You must do your homework properly. Where can you simply handcuffed a person? Siti was doing her best to protect n provide a refuge for a girl.

  • I saw the video clip on on Kini TV.
I just cannot understand why Siti Kassim is arrested. She was not at all preventing any officer to do their duty.
She was there just to enquire & protest why her house was raided.

  • Something fishy here!! Some authorities are jumping on the opportunity to get level with Siti even they know that there is nothing substantially to arrest or fremand her . A report may be lodge but following proper procedure do not allow an immediate arrest since the police are aware of the abuses by the victim's mother. Is there a warrant of arrest issued??
