POLICE resuming investigation into the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder case will start by taking another look at the investigation paper to check if anything had been overlooked, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim said today.

He said this was because the case had been tried and a verdict had been reached.

“So we have to recall the IP and look at any new allegation and examine new evidence and see if there are grounds for it,” he said.

Only then could the police proceed to call in the list of witnesses in the case, including former prime minister Najib Razak’s former special aide Musa Safri, who was named in the latest police report lodged by Altantuya’s father, Setev Shaariibuu on June 20.

“We will call up Musa if there is a need,” said Noor Rashid.

Setev in his police report stated he believed that if not for Musa, the convicted murderers of Altantuya, Azilah Hadri and Sirul Azhar Umar would not have gone to Najib’s house and taken his daughter away that day, and she would still be alive today.

“Therefore Musa is a very crucial witness as he would be able to provide information as to who instructed him to secure Azilah and Sirul’s attendance,” Setev said in his report.

Setev said Azilah and Sirul had no motive to kill Altantuya as both men had never met her before.

“They did not know my daughter before they murdered her and as such they could not have a motive. Sirul has claimed that he has been made the scapegoat and he has recently implied in Australia that there are others involved,” Setev said.

Noor Rashid said  the old team of investigators will also be called up to take part in the new investigation and police were considering whether on not there was a need for a committee to oversee the probe.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun last week confirmed police would reopen the case following Altantuya’s father police report.

Altantuya, 28, is believed to have been shot dead and her body blown up with military grade explosives (C4) in a forest near the Subang Dam in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam in 2006.

Altantuya was a translator in the Malaysian government’s negotiations to purchase two Scorpene-class submarines from French shipbuilding giant DCNI in 2002. She was reportedly the mistress of Abdul Razak Baginda, a defence analyst close to then-defence minister Najib Razak.

Altantuya’s alleged affair with Abdul Razak Baginda came to light soon before her death, together with reports she had demanded a payoff for working as an interpreter on the French submarine deal. – June 24, 2018.
