THE appointment of Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus as the new governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) will boost investor confidence in Malaysia, said Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali.

“Confident that the new governor will be able to execute her duty effectively. She has a very vast experience in BNM before.

“I’m am confident that she will be a good governor to assist the government to overcome the financial crisis,” he told The Malaysian Insight when met at the Putrajaya Mosque today.

Azmin also said Nor Shamsiah used to be part of investigations into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) under former governor Zeti Akhtar and was knowledgable on the subject matter.

“Certainly she is fully aware of the current situation. I think we should give her the opportunity to come back as a new governor of the central bank and let her look at the entire issues in totality,” the Gombak MP said.

Earlier today, Bloomberg quoted a spokesman for Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirming Nor Shamsiah’s appointment after her nomination was approved by the King.

Nor Shamsiah is a former BNM senior officer who had previously assisted in investigations into the scandal-plagued 1MDB.

She was deputy governor for six years before she left in November 2016.

She is expected to hold a press conference with Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng this afternoon. – June 22, 2018.
