THE father of Mongolian interpreter Altantuya Shaariibuu, who was killed by two policemen in 2006, wants the Attorney-General’s Chambers to reopen the murder case.

Dr Setev Shaariibuu is in Malaysia to discuss this with Attorney-General Tommy Thomas today, and is also likely to meet Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the same matter.

“I want to get closure and find the truth. The aim of the meeting is to discuss reopening the case,” he said at the office of his lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, in Kuala Lumpur today.

Ramkarpal said Dr Mahathir had agreed to meet Setev in Putrajaya tomorrow.

Setev said that he came back to Malaysia mainly to find out who ordered the murder of his daughter.

“A lot of things have happened here. There was a lot of injustice in the (previous) Malaysian government.

“This case has been going on for too long and is riddled with problems.

“If there was an issue, why didn’t they just handcuff her (Altantuya) and send her back to Mongolia? Why did they have to kill her?”

Setev also said that this was the sixth time he was coming here to seek justice for Altantuya.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun told reporters last month that there were no grounds for a renewed investigation.

Altantuya, 28, is believed to have been shot dead, before her body was blown up with explosives in a forest in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, in 2006.

She was said to have been the lover of Abdul Razak Baginda, a defence analyst who advised former prime minister Najib Razak between 2000 and 2008 when he was defence minister.

Setev said that the family have endured deep anguish and unending grief for the grotesque murder of his eldest daughter for the last 12 years.

“With renewed hope, I have returned to Malaysia to seek justice for my murdered daughter.

“Altantuya was the main breadwinner of the family. She had two sons, and one of them is disabled and bedridden.”

Setev also said that the previous government did everything to prevent the truth from emerging.

On his meeting with Dr Mahathir, Setev said that he never expected to get the chance to meet him.

“I never thought that the prime minister would receive me.

“I’m full of hope that the new government, under the premiership of Dr Mahathir, will do everything under its power to render justice.

“All these years, I was hoping that there would be a change in government.”

On talk of whether he received money from politicians to close the case, Setev denied receiving anything.

It is believed that Altantuya’s body was blown up using military-grade C4 explosives.

Two policemen – Sirul Azhar Umar and Azilah Hadri – who were once Najib’s bodyguards, were found guilty and sentenced to death in 2015.

Razak was charged with abetting the murder, but was freed.

Azilah is on death row at Kajang Prison, while Sirul is being held in an Australian immigration detention centre after escaping to Australia before sentencing.

Sirul recently offered to testify in exchange for a pardon, but the offer was rejected by Ramkarpal, who is also DAP’s Bukit Gelugor MP.

Sirul’s deportation may be blocked by legal hurdles, as Canberra will not extradite anybody who risks facing the death penalty, reported the Australian SBS news agency recently. – June 19, 2018.

  • Yes, the case should be re-opened and proper trial be conducted. The deceased and her family deserve justice and Malaysians want to know the truth. The culprits must be punished. No one is above the law.
