7 in the running for Umno top post

SEVEN individuals are vying for the Umno presidency, said executive secretary Ab Rauf Yusoh.

The crowded field is unprecedented in the party’s history. 

The names will be announced tomorrow after being vetted by the party and the Insolvency Department, he said.

“There are seven people contesting the post of president. All the nominees will be vetted for qualification and insolvency.

“Tomorrow, we will announce the candidates,” Rauf said in a press conference today.

Among those running for president are Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, interim president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

Three individuals are contesting the deputy president’s post while nine are vying for one of three vice-presidential posts, Rauf said.

Those vying for the deputy presidency are Umno information chief Annuar Musa and former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan. 

Those running for vice-president are said to include Johari Abdul Ghani, Khaled Nordin, Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, Ahmad Said, Ismail Sabri Yaakop, Shahidan Kassim and Mahadzir Khalid.

Khairy was supposed to contest for a vice-president’s post but pulled out at the eleventh hour to challenge for party presidency instead. 

In total, Umno received 612 nominations for various posts, including speakers for wings.

For Youth chief, there were nine nominations and for deputy youth chief, nine names were also submitted. 

For the Wanita wing and Puteri, eight candidates are vying to be head. 

A total of 121 individuals submitted their nominations for a Supreme Council seat.

One of the Youth candidates is Sungai Besar division chief Jamal Md Yunos, who is on the run after being charged with trespassing.

When asked if Jamal is qualified to be in the running, Rauf said he was “innocent until proven guilty” and hence eligible. 

Today, is the last day for the candidates to submit their applications.

The June 30 elections are seen as a crucial first step towards rebuilding Umno after it lost federal power for the first time on May 9. – June 17, 2018.
