DEFENCE Minister Mohamad Sabu said investigations into possible misconduct and allegations of misappropriations involving ministries will begin after Hari Raya.
He said only after the festive holidays will the special investigation committee headed by former auditor-general Ambrin Buang will begin work.
“The committee will have to hire staff and find an office. It will be a tough job. But Ambrin can do it, I am sure.
“He was formerly A-G. He will be able to do the forensic auditing if necessary. The power given to him by the PM is vast,” he told reporters at his open house at his home in Kampung Guar Petai today.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that Ambrin has been appointed chairman of the special investigation committee on issues concerning public governance, procurement and finance.
The investigation will begin with the Defence Ministry.
Mohamad said his ministry would share all information on suspected scandals with Ambrin’s committee.
“I have heard of scandals in Mindef. We will have to send the committee led by Ambrin all the information we have.
“We cannot act just on hearsay,” he said without elaborating on the scandals.
Mohamad added there was currently no timeframe for the committee to wrap up its investigations, but the matter would be discussed with the prime minister. – June 16, 2018
