THE Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections Bersih 2.0 has embarked on a campaign to gather support from all Malaysians to put an end to what it called “party discrimination” by ensuring all opposition assemblymen get funding to develop their constituencies.
In Sarawak, the civil society last Sunday launched a petition drive to demand that DAP and PKR assemblymen get a fair allocation.
Bersih Sarawak chairman Ann Teo called on the Gabungan Parti Sarawak-led state government to provide the same allocation of RM5 million to its assemblymen to all opposition lawmakers.
The Sarawak government provides an annual allocation of RM1 million for minor rural project (MRP), RM5 million for rural transformation programme (RTP) and RM250,000 for the running of their service centre to each of its elected representatives.
The seven DAP and two PKR Sarawak assemblymen do not get a sen.
Teo said voters in constituencies won by an opposition party should not be punished.
Bersih said by the online petition could “effectively put an end to party discrimination”.
Apart from Sarawak, Bersih urged Barisan Nasional-led state governments in Perlis and Pahang and the PAS-led state governments in Kelantan and Terengganu to implement the same policy of equal allocation to all assemblymen.
The new Pakatan Harapan federal government allocate RM500,000 to government MPs and RM100,000 to opposition MPs for the upkeep of their service centres. – June 12, 2018.
