THE Transport Ministry will decide on the future of the Automated Enforcement System (AES), said minister Anthony Loke.

“AES is something that we are looking at but there is no decision on AES yet because it involves other implications.

“And we have to study it before we make an announcement,” he told reporters at the ministry today.

He however refused to say whether the system will be abolished.

“I have asked the ministry officials, relevant department to give me concrete proposals and I will discuss the options with the ministry officials and they will be brought to the Cabinet for the decision.

“(The decision) will be announced very soon, within one or two months we need to make a decision on AES,” he said.

Loke was earlier asked whether the government was reviewing the agreement to manage and operate the 21 AES cameras installed nationwide.

“We haven’t taken any action against those with outstanding AES summonses but we will decide on how to deal with the summonses,” he said.

The previous Barisan Nasional administration received backlash over the lack of transparency in awarding the AES contract.

In December 2011, ATES Sdn Bhd and Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd were awarded a 66-month concession. The initial plan of the AES scheme was to install 1,093 cameras nationwide.

According to The Edge, Bousted Holdings Bhd had in April 2014 paid RM199 million for a 50% stake in Irat Properties Sdn Bhd, which wholly owns ATES and Beta Tegap. – June 12, 2018
