FORMER minister Rais Yatim has joined Bersatu after campaigning in the final hours of the last general election for the party founded by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Dr Mahathir, who is Bersatu and Pakatan Harapan chairman, handed over Rais’ membership card at the party’s breaking-fast ceremony in Putrajaya this evening.

The former Umno leader’s strident support for the nascent Pakatan Harapan government was also on display yesterday when the recognised protector of Malay language and culture threw his support behind Tommy Thomas being named the new attorney-general.

The former information, communication, and culture minister urged everyone to stop bickering on the issue, asking that they respect Dr Mahathir’s choice for the key position.

“There is nothing wrong with Tommy Thomas as A-G. Stop this bickering when there are no legal grounds to bicker,” he said in a tweet.

Rais said that the federal constitution allowed a non-Malay to be appointed as the attorney-general.  – June 4, 2018.
