FOUR men, who allegedly beat up an Uber driver who is claimed to have molested the wife of one of them, were charged at the magistrate’s court today with rioting.
The four included Teoh Chiew Beng, 37, a father of two and the husband of the Vietnamese woman who claimed she was molested by the driver.
The others are Ng Chung Pheng, 32; Koay Hean Tatt, 32; and Wong Kok Leong, 27.
All four claimed trial under Section 147 of the Penal Code. If convicted, they can be jailed up to two years, fined or both.
Magistrate Catherine Nicholas allowed each of them bail of RM6,000 with one surety and set July 18 for mention.
The four were represented by counsel Tan Guat Cheng, who asked forw a lower bail, considering that the accused had surrendered to the police.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shaharuddin prosecuted. She is also the prosecutor in the Uber driver’s molest case.
The four men had allegedly beaten up Muhammad Sukri Ramli, 30, at Jalan Lintang Paya Terubong at about 3pm on June 7, a day after he allegedly molested Teoh’s 43-year-old wife.
It was reported that after learning of the incident from his wife, Teoh had told her to contact Sukri.
When Sukri turned up, they hit him, causing him injuries. A video of the incident went viral.
On Tuesday, Sukri claimed trial at the magistrate’s for outraging the modesty of the woman.
It is alleged that while driving her, he had unzipped his pants, and placed the woman’s hands on his private parts.
Sitarun Nisa allowed the accused RM8,000 bail with one surety, and fixed July 18 for case management.
The Vietnamese woman was also detained for investigation.
She is being remanded by the Penang Immigration Department pending a report on her passport. β June 15, 2017.
