SIRUL Azhar Umar is a convicted murderer who must serve his sentence, and it is ridiculous to suggest he be allowed to stay in Australia, lawyer Ramkarpal Singh said.

Sirul, who is convicted of killing Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu in 2006, is being held in an Australian immigration detention centre.

He has been hoping to strike a deal with the new federal government to get a full pardon. In return, he would “spill the beans” on the murder of the woman, who was shot twice with a semi-automatic weapon and whose body was blown up with C4 military-grade explosives.

The Bukit Gelugor MP said Sirul, who does not want to return to Malaysia and rejects the idea of a life sentence, was in no position to bargain over his predicament.

The prominent lawyer said if the death penalty was abolished by the present government, or if his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, Sirul could be deported to Malaysia.

He was confident that one of the two situations would occur in the near future, adding that it would be “ridiculous to suggest that Sirul be allowed to stay in Australia in such circumstances”.

“There would be no reason for Australia to continue detaining him there and he should be sent back to Malaysia to serve his sentence.

“He must serve his sentence and cooperate with the Malaysian police on the question of who ordered him to kill Altantuya.

“Justice must be served in Altantuya’s case and Australia ought to play its part in ensuring the same is achieved by deporting Sirul to Malaysia upon his death sentence being commuted or abolished,” Ramkarpal said in a statement.

The lawyer MP, who also represents Altantuya’s family members, also asked why Sirul was being allowed access to the press by the Australian authorities so easily, to the point that he was able to hold regular press conferences.

“Is this how detainees are treated in Australia?”

Sirul had recently given an interview with The Guardian, which quoted the former policeman as saying: “I don’t want to go back. People say: ‘Don’t give a pardon’. I would be killed in jail.” – May 30, 2018.

  • I just could not comprehend. Why the fuss on this small time killer??? are we forgetting he is an accomplice to another killer who is awaiting his death ceremony. Why are we not squeezing the truth from the available dead man to be. Who the freaking pariah Sirul Azhar think he is and why is PDRM, AG and the MPs pussy footing in his case. His partners' Azilah is sitting pretty quiet in his cell. No PDRM personnel has bother to start a heavy interrogation on the extraction of the truth and clearly it is a big disappointment of PDRM in handling cases on VIP criminals who are untouchable. Azilah while away his time on rakyat expenses and I think he knows he might get a repieve if he plays his game well.. Why are the authorities not working on Azilah to reslove this long outstanding case ????. The PD Bala SD has already indicated some names and yet the PDRM are nonchalantly fiddling around for new info and evidences. If small timer thiefs are dying easily in detention while the bad ass killers are getting hordes of attentions and having the ability to conjure up a leverage in negotiations is really telling about our system in the rule of law. Lots of hot air blowing.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
