MISSING Amri Che Mat was under police surveillance and former Inspector-General Khalid Abu Bakar knew about it, Norhayati Ariffin told the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) public inquiry today.
Norhayati, the wife of the missing Perlis activist, said this information was relayed to her by a Special Branch officer, identified as Sergeant Shamzaini, on May 12.
She said he also told her the Deputy Commissioner Awaluddin (Jadid) and the Perlis police chief also knew that her husband was being monitored because of forex dealings and Shia teachings.
Norhayati said Shamzaini told her that he had been a police officer for 18 years.
“He said for 10 years he was based in Kuala Lumpur, and the other eight in Perlis.
“He said police had been monitoring Amri, and ASP Razman had sent all the information on Amri to Bukit Aman.”
Norhayati said Razman is Shamzaini’s superior, and was in charge of the surveillance on Amri.
She told the panel that she questioned Shamzaini on the whereabouts of Amri and Pastor Raymond Koh, but he claimed that he did not know.
In her statement earlier, Norhayati said Amri had been taken away by force.
Commissioner Nik Salida Suhaila Nik Salleh, who is on the panel, asked her to explain.
Norhayati said she was told by Shamzaini that Amri was beaten, and had his car smashed and abandoned in Bukit Cabang.
She said Koh was taken away because he was allegedly proselytising to Muslims.
Amri is believed to have been abducted by a group of people in 4WD vehicles in Kg Padang Behor.
Koh was abducted on February 13 last year by several men in balaclavas who used black SUVs to block his car in Petaling Jaya.
“They were both taken, and there is still no clue as to their whereabouts,” said Norhayati.
“There are similarities… they seem to be cases of abduction.”
She added that Shamzaini told her that he was not involved in Amri’s abduction, and that he was in Kuala Lumpur when the activist went missing and has proof of this.
Suhakam is conducting a public inquiry into the disappearance of Amri, Koh, Pastor Joshua Hilmy and Joshua’s wife, Ruth, to ascertain if they are cases of enforced disappearance. – May 30, 2018.
