AN apology to the Raja of Perlis is not necessary, said state Barisan Nasional chairman Shahidan Kassim, who had defied the ruler in the state’s menteri besar crisis.
The former minister also said there is no need for him to step down as head of the state BN.
“What do I need to apologise for? It was not my fault. If the assemblymen want to apologise, it is up to them. But not me,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Last week, nine Umno assemblymen skipped the swearing-in of Menteri Besar Azlan Man. One of the reps has said they are prepared to meet the Agong to resolve the issue.
Shahidan, who also leads Perlis Umno, said the state BN is sticking to its stand that Azlan is not its choice for the post.
“It is inappropriate to appoint Azlan as it contravenes Perlis’ state law, which says the MB candidate has to have majority support. Azlan did not get majority support.”
The crisis began when the state BN said it was unhappy with Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail’s rejection of its pick for menteri besar, Ismail Kassim, who is Shahidan’s brother.
Shahidan then announced that Azlan will be sacked from Umno, but this was rejected by the top leadership.
BN, which won 10 out of Perlis’ 15 state seats in the 14th general election, has obtained a simple majority to form the state government. – May 29, 2018.
