PUTERI Umno chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has announced that she will not seek re-election in the next party polls, to make way for new leaders capable of reform.

The Masjid Tanah MP said she will instead focus on serving her constituents and representing them in Parliament.

“As such, I have made the decision not to contest any party position at all levels, in order to give space to other leaders to lead Umno towards total change,” she said on Twitter.

The former deputy tourism and culture minister said she hopes that more Umno leaders will follow suit and make way for the younger generation to lead the party.

The 41-year-old, however, would not have been eligible to defend her post as Puteri chief anyway, as she has exceeded the age limit, which is 40.

All positions in Umno will be contested in the party’s upcoming annual general assembly, with nominations to be open online on June 1 until 5pm on June 17.

Voting for the Youth, Wanita and Puteri wings will be conducted on June 23. As for Supreme Council positions, including the president, deputy president and three vice-presidents, it will be held on June 30.

Mas Ermiyati has led Puteri Umno since October 2013, taking over from mentor Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin. – May 26, 2018.
