Shukri's emotional outburst not to be taken for weakness

The Malaysian Insight

MALAYSIAN Anti-Corruption Commission chief Mohd Shukri Abdull has come under fire for jumping the gun, talking too much, and being unprofessional with the comments coming in furiously, including a police report lodged against him for not taking action when he was offered a bribe!

All to be taken in stride, being the top anti-corruption investigator!

Shukri spilled his guts in a moment of emotional weakness, and got into some bother. Of course, legal experts were also at hand to point out his naivety, and that his outburst could jeopardise the impartiality of investigations.

Really?

Just points of ambiguous arguments and reasons to give opinions. Insufficient to make a dent in the overall objective of the investigations.

Yes, it was somewhat careless of him to make such sweeping statements and allegations, attacking almost every branch of the government and the criminal justice system.

Most of what was divulged needs verification by supporting evidence, either documentary or oral, by the aggrieved person.

Shukri will probably fall short in furnishing this supporting evidence.

One thing prevailed, and that is, this dog of war yearned for his day and got it!

Shukri could not turn to any limb of the criminal justice system when he was up against the most powerful man in the country at the material time, but he got through the extenuating circumstances with his bona fide rules of engagement.

He resisted in every way he could, but slowly had to succumb as he had no recourse.

The criminal justice system was temporarily in limbo, with two of its most powerful limbs of investigation pitted against each other, and the attorney-general was coincidentally indisposed (although it’s beyond me as to why no one could stand in from chambers at the critical time).

Shukri was left to fend for himself, risking life and limb, survived the ordeal, and, against all odds, is back at the helm of MACC!

Investigators are trained to react to situations that are unexpected, and will adapt to rules of engagement within the rule of law in the pursuit of evidence collection.

It comes naturally, especially when they are in hot pursuit of their suspects. The law protects these actions as long as they are carried out in good faith.

The pressure cooker finally burst at that press conference. Unprofessional? No.

Just a moment of emotional weakness, which I am sure can be legally remedied and will not happen again, as he regains full control and composure in carrying out his duties.

It is opined that this will eventually enhance his credibility when the prosecution makes the prima facie submissions. The real battle will begin when proceedings commence. – May 24, 2018.
