MOST people glance briefly at the media waiting patiently outside former prime minister Najib Razak’s house at Jalan Langgak Duta, or take quick photographs of them.
One man, however, shows his support for the media’s hard work by painting pictures of reporters waiting at the entrance.
“Seeing the media under the hot sun or in the rain, covering news for people like us… I don’t know how to support them, other than with what I do best,” art teacher Tan Poh Chuan told reporters at the corner of Jalan Langgak Duta.
The 45-year-old from Kepong said he was there to support his friend, who is a photographer.
“My friend has been covering Najib’s house day and night, so I am here to support him,” he said.
Tan said he had been painting for more than 20 years, and this was his first time painting in the streets.
When it started to rain, Tan moved his chair under the shade and continued with his watercolour painting, undisturbed by the weather.
“I teach at an art centre in Kepong,” he said, while painting.
A reporter opened an umbrella to shield him from the rain.
“I don’t know whether I’ll come back again tomorrow, as this is more of a spontaneous thing, but this is the only way I can show my support for the reporters here,” he said. – May 23, 2018.
