More trouble at Najib’s secret intelligence agency

WHEN it rains, it pours.

Still reeling from having its director-general interrogated by police over documents allegedly passed to her by Najib Razak and the agency’s clandestine role in keeping him in power, now comes news of a police report on infighting at the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO).

A top official of the secret intelligence and surveillance agency in the former prime minister’s office has lodged a police report, complaining about a Wikipedia entry that accuses him of syphoning off billions of ringgit from the troubled 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) fund.

‎The 35-year-old man said the contents of the entry were aimed at defaming him, along with two other senior officers of the intelligence unit, known officially as the Research Department.

‎In a copy of the police report sighted by Malaysia Decides, the complainant said a screenshot of the Wikipedia page had been circulated on WhatsApp to his friends within the department as well as those outside the circle.

‎He said he believes the insertion in Wikipedia was the work of a former staffer.

“The person had accused me of managing money amounting to RM3 billion, including helping my top officer in buying luxury vehicles, homes and seven palaces.

“The person also said two of the posh homes were located in London and Budapest. Not only that, the person also defamed us by saying we are trying to sabotage the Pakatan Harapan government,” the complainant said in the police report.

Checks by the Malaysia Decides showed that the allegedly defamatory statement remains on the page and the last time someone edited the content was two days ago.

The report comes days after officers from the Commercial Crime Division raided the home of Hasanah Ab Hamid, the unit’s director-general.

Police believe that Najib handed her sensitive documents two days before GE14. The search was not successful and police believe that the documents are hidden in one of the safe houses owned by the unit.

Hasanah ‎has been ordered to go on leave. The two buildings where the unit operates from has been sealed off.

Government sources said that the MEIO received massive funding from the Najib administration to keep track of government critics in the country and abroad.

It is understood that the unit monitored closely the political situation in South Thailand and in southern Philippines, two areas where Islamic groups are fighting for autonomy.

‎Investigators noted that while the MEIO existed even before Najib became prime minister, it had become more involved in carrying out clandestine operations to keep him in power.

This included hiring foreign consultants to help resolve the 1MDB issue that was blowing up in jurisdictions outside Malaysia. – May 23, 2018.
