Council of Eminent Persons discussed fuel subsidies, says Daim

THE Council of Eminent Persons discussed targeted fuel subsidies today, said former finance minister and council spokesman Daim Zainuddin.

One of Pakatan Harapan’s election promises was to help stabilise fuel costs and introduce targeted fuel subsidies for vehicles with a lower power output.

Daim said there was no discussion on Malaysia’s RM1 trillion debt.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the country’s debt has reached the alarming figure.

The council had several meetings with government officials at Ilham Tower since 10.30am today

Among those present were Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) CEO Shahril Ridza Ridzuan, Khazanah Nasional managing director Azman Mokhtar, Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry secretary-general Jamil Salleh, Customs director-general T. Subromaniam, EPU director-general Nik Azman Nik Abdul Majid, and EPU development budget director Adam Sulong.

Senior officers from the sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional and the EPF as well as representatives from toll concessionaires briefed the council last Thursday.

Shareholders of Plus Highway and managing officers of UEM and Plus Highway also met council members on the same day. – May 22, 2018.
