THE new government should not investigate Najib Razak for his alleged crimes just to fulfil its manifesto promises, said a supporter of the former prime minister.
“I am not against the government. I just feel that there is unfairness in investigating Najib but not the crimes committed during Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s time,” said a supporter who did not want to be named.
“I am here because I feel Najib has been wronged. Be fair in investigating. If you really want to be true to your manifesto, tackle the issue of rising cost of living. Ikan kembung still costs a lot,” said another supporter.
A group of 40 Najib supporters gathered at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters in Putrajaya today as the former prime minister was called in for questioning.
The group was organised by former Ministry of Finance media officer and Umno leader Lokman Adam.
Putrajaya Umno member Norhana Mohd Radzi, 49 said Najib was innocent until proven guilty.
“They should treat him fairly. Najib is not that kind of person (to commit crime).
“If he did anything wrong, we want proof,” she said.
Norhana said no matter what Najib might have done, the authorities should not mistreat him.
Another supporter who declined to be named wanted to know “on what basis” police were raiding his properties.
“The authorities cannot simply raid his home if they have no proof,” she said.
Earlier, Najib arrived at the MACC headquarters at 9.41am in a white Toyota Vellfire. He was escorted by two outriders and two other vehicles.
Najib was summoned by MACC last Friday for questioning over the RM42 million transferred from former 1Malaysia Development Bhd subsidiary, SRC International Sdn Bhd, into his bank account.
MACC will focus on how RM42 million went from SRC International to his account.
New MACC chief Mohd Shukri Abdull is due to hold a press conference later today.
Shukri, who had served 32 years before retiring as deputy chief commissioner (operation) together with former MACC chief Abu Kassim Mohamed, left the agency abruptly in July 2015 after saying that there was basis for MACC to probe into SRC International.
SRC International is an energy company owned by the Ministry of Finance and a subsidiary of 1MDB before it was separated in February 2012.
Before Najib’s arrival, Commercial Crime Division chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh also arrived at the MACC building. Amar is leading police investigations into the 1MDB case and has conducted several raids at premises linked to Najib. – May 22, 2018.
