Tough work ahead, says new MACC chief Shukri Abdull

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) gets a new chief in Mohd Shukri Abdull today, as the agency seeks to relaunch investigations into the multi-billion dollar 1Malaysia Development Berhad corruption scandal implicating former prime minister Najib Razak.

Shukri, a retired deputy MACC chief commissioner, clocked in at 10.29am today after he was appointed to replace Dzulkifli Ahmad, who resigned from the position last week.

Speaking briefly to the media, he said the task ahead facing MACC was tough.

“It’s very tough for me. I will talk to the media tomorrow,” he said.

MACC has reopened a probe against SRC International Bhd, a former subsidiary company of 1MDB before it was removed and placed directly under the Finance Ministry, apparently to cushion its parent company 1MDB from the firm’s millions of dollars of losses in failed investments.

Najib has been summoned to MACC to have his statement recorded tomorrow in connection with the graft probe linked with SRC.

The former Umno and Barisan Nasional president has been the subject of a police investigation into the 1MDB financial scandal since Wednesday, when hundreds of items were seized from his homes, the Prime Minister’s Office and Seri Perdana, Najib’s official residence when he was the prime minister.

Among the items that were seized were 284 boxes of designer handbags including Hermes Birkins, said to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each. – May 21, 2018.
