More evidence of Umno-PAS money transfers, says Sarawak Report editor

SARAWAK Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown holds more incriminating evidence of Umno transferring money to Islamist party PAS, she said today.

In an interview on the BFM radio station, Rewcastle-Brown said it was the libel suit PAS had brought against her that led to her discovering more details of the alleged money transfers from former Umno president Najib Razak to PAS.

She said that the suit had accused her of alleging that PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang was taking money from Najib, based on an article Clare had written in Sarawak Report.

“That’s what they say I meant, but of course that’s not what I said.

“I was one of the people who could report on that widespread belief (of money flowing from Umno into PAS), and that’s what I said: that there was a widespread belief in Malaysia about this money. The figure I used was based on research that was produced at that time and that I had heard of,” she said.

However, because of the legal suit against her, she was “subsequently forced to look at that relationship a lot more closely”, which resulted in her discovering more evidence to the allegations.

“And I have a great deal more evidence than I did,” Rewcastle-Brown said in the interview this morning.

In March, Abdul Hadi’s lawyer, Wan Rohimi Wan Daud, announced that the London High Court had ordered Sarawak Report to pay RM156,017 in costs in its case against Abdul Hadi.

He said the president had won all five of its interlocutory applications in its libel suit against Rewcastle-Brown, after the party sued her for libel over an article she wrote alleging that the party had received RM90 million in bribes from Umno.

Sarawak Report however refuted the announcement, saying the claims that “five applications defeated” and Hadi had “won the case” were false.

“Political parties cannot sue in the United Kingdom, and Sarawak Report had petitioned for a quick preliminary trial to determine whether it was Abdul Hadi or PAS who was behind the case to silence Sarawak Report on the issue of money flowing from Umno into the political party,” the whistleblower site said.

Sarawak Report said the London high court judge had set a provisional date for a full trial of Abdul Hadi’s case against Sarawak Report for ten days, lasting from April 1 to April 12, 2019. – May 21, 2018.
