Anwar calls for 'fair and transparent' investigation into Najib

The Malaysian Insight

ANWAR Ibrahim wants the investigation into the 1MDB financial scandal and Najib Razak’s alleged role in it to be conducted in a fair and transparent manner.

Anwar also offered Najib some sound advice from Jakarta, where Anwar is meeting his old friend, former Indonesian president, B.J. Habibi.

“To him (Najib), my advice (is), find a good defence counsel,” said Anwar.

He also urged the people to await the findings of the investigation before judging Najib.

Anwar was this week released from jail after receiving a royal pardon. He was convicted of sodomy in 2015 and sentenced to five years in jail. International rights groups had protested his incarceration for what they said were “trumped up charges” and had regarded him to be a prisoner of conscience.

Meanwhile, police are investigating Najib and the role he allegedly played in the embezzling of 1MDB funds. Najib set up the state investor in 2009 when he became the prime minister. He has denied wrongdoing. – May 20, 2018.
