NAJIB Razak reiterated he never stole money from Malaysians even as police intensified investigations into his role at 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
He again denied allegations he had taken money from the state investment fund, saying he had never taken a single sen from the public.
“I do not steal from the people. A lot of accusations have been made. I was made a target because I was prime minister and party president.
“(They think that) If my image is tarnished, Umno will be destroyed,” Najib said in an opening speech at the Umno Pekan branch meeting today.
The former Umno president is the Pekan division chief.
“Pekan people know me. Pekan people know I am not a thief. Pekan people have known me for 44 years,” he told his audience.
Najib said among the accusations hurled at him while he was in office was that he made government decisions only after consulting his wife, Rosmah Mansor.
“They attacked me and my wife. They said whatever decision I will make will depend on my wife.
“Decisions are made in the cabinet and in Supreme Council meetings, not at home. I don’t tell ministers I need to refer to my wife. That is preposterous,” Najib said.
Najib and his wife are being investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
The couple’s home in Jalan Duta Langgak and three condo units in Pavilion Residences were raided by cops investigating the case. – May 20, 2018.
