Leaks, raids and an unhappy Najib

The Malaysian Insight

PERHAPS in a few months, when the anger has abated, more Malaysians may feel a pinch of sympathy for the fallen first couple.

But not now. Not just yet.

So if Najib Razak was hoping to reverse the tide of animosity at him and his wife, Rosmah ‎Mansor by revealing alleged acts of unprofessionalism by the police raiding party, he is going to meet failure.

Malaysians have already sorted out in their minds who are the crooks and who are the good guys.

The good guys are those who are spending days raiding properties belonging or connected to the former prime minister, and discovering and carting away millions of ringgit in handbags, cash and jewellery.

Sure, Najib has a legitimate grouse if the cops did raid the fridge in an apartment occupied by his daughter and if they did walk off with shoes and clothes belonging to his grand-daughter.

But he is not going to get much sympathy. Online citizens are probably going to compare the theft of food to the billions looted from 1MDB and slam Najib for trying to tar the cops.

And even if Malaysians agree that the police officers could have been more professional, they are going to see this as evidence of how much Malaysian institutions such as the police have decayed under Barisan Nasional.

For now, Najib and Rosmah will just have put up with the public shaming and daily humiliation.

Malaysians are not feeling charitable at the moment. Even Umno leaders who were paying him homage at the start of the month have had to be encouraged to visit him at his private residence in Taman Duta. – May 19, 2018.
