ANWAR Ibrahim will be meeting former Indonesian president B.J. Habibie in Jakarta tomorrow, Indonesian media reported.
The meeting between the two was confirmed by the executive director of the Habibie Centre to CNN Indonesia.
Anwar, who received a full royal pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong last Wednesday, said in a statement that he would be responding to several invitations, and holding lectures at a number of universities.
He has a close relationship with Habibie, who with his wife, Ainun, was close with Anwar when he was receiving medical treatment in Munich, Germany in September 2004 following his acquittal from sodomy charges and release from jail.
The two leaders have been characterised by Southeast Asian political researchers as influential Muslim democrats and reformists in their respective nations.
Habibie took over the Indonesian presidency after Suharto resigned in 1998.
He reformed Indonesian politics and economics, and abolished restrictions on the media.
However, Habibie only held the position for about a year, before he lost support in Parliament following criticism of his release of Timor Leste from the republic’s rule. – May 19, 2018.
