CLARE Rewcastle-Brown’s tireless crusade to expose wrongdoing in 1Malaysia Development Berhad will not stop, even though a new government is in power.
“Although this is the end of an era thanks to the election, there is still a great deal of information coming out about past matters. There is much still to uncover.
“So, I am poking around a bit and responding to various information strands,” the Sarawak Report editor told Malaysia Decides today.
Sarawak Report also ran a series of exposes on Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, linking him to PetroSaudi, which was used as a front to launder 1MDB funds.
“It has been fascinating watching much that we partly knew and suspected now finally coming fully into the open, but there is a long way to go, and a great deal needs to be put back in order and retrieved for the Malaysian people.
“I hope I will be able to play a small part in that,” said Rewcastle-Brown, who arrived in the capital yesterday night.
Rewcastle-Brown said she was in town to “tie up some matters”.
She was blacklisted by the Najib administration for reports on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal, and last visited Malaysia in January 2015.
Sarawak Report was also blocked in July 2015 for allegedly posting unsubstantiated information, despite an ongoing investigation by the 1MDB special task force.
The ban on Sarawak Report was lifted on May 15, on the same day the 1MDB audit report was declassified.
“I hope to come back to KL for a lengthier visit sometime soon, and this is just a short initial visit to meet up with some friends and tie up some matters, which is made easier now that I am allowed to travel freely,” said Rewcastle-Brown.
She said she is not meeting any officials from the new Pakatan Harapan government.
1MDB is the brainchild of Najib, who is accused of misappropriating billions of ringgit from the fund, in a scandal the United States attorney-general dubbed “kleptocracy at its worst”.
Six premises linked to Najib were raided this week as part of the probe into an estimated US$4.5 billion (RM18 billion) missing from the state investor. Police seized luxury handbags, cash, and jewellery from the properties.
The Council of Eminent Persons, established by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is forming a separate committee to look into matters related to 1MDB.
Former attorney-general Abu Talib Othman will head the committee. – May 19, 2018.
