MOHAMED Azmin Ali’s selection to the cabinet is based on the Selangor government’s success, which Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad hopes to replicate in other states.

The Selangor menteri besar was yesterday named as the economic affairs minister, which Azmin said was a surprise.

Azmin said he hopes to implement new strategies for the nation’s economic development.

“These are issues which are very important to me. We have the experience and good policies for public housing in Selangor and we can extend them to the federal level,” he told reporters after meeting the prime minister at Yayasan Perdana Leadership Foundation.

However, he would need to meet the sultan of Selangor before he could take up the new portfolio.

“I will make an official announcement soon of me taking up the portfolio, as I have to see the sultan of Selangor first.

“Until today, I am still the Selangor MB and if a decision is made that I will help the federal government, then I will resign as MB.”

Dr Mahathir will also meet Azmin later to review the mega-projects approved by former prime minister Najib Razak.

“It is a new ministry and the challenges are great. In the next few weeks, we have to come up with new policies and new strategies.” – May 19, 2018.
