MALACCA Umno today endorsed Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to take over as president of the party, with Hishamuddin Hussein and Khairy Jamaluddin as deputy president and vice-president respectively.
Bukit Katil Umno division chief Mohd Ali Rustam wanted the top three posts of president, deputy president, and vice-president to not be contested in the next party election.
“The state Umno (Malacca) has endorsed Zahid as Umno president, Hishamuddin as deputy president, and Khairy Jamaluddin as vice-president.
“We need the party to be stronger in facing today’s challenges because we are now an opposition party,” he said at the party’s headquarters at the Putra World Trade Centre.
He said other posts in the party should be allowed to be contested, however.
“We have to give our full support to these top three posts so that Umno can move forward with its chiefs. Hopefully, the party can be restored,” he said.
Meetings for the branches, Wanita, Youth, and Puteri will be held from today until June 10. Meetings at the division level are set to be held on June 30, ahead of this year’s Umno general assembly.
Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, however, said he did not agree with the no-contest proposal, saying it would send a bad message to the public and was one of the reasons people lost faith in Umno. – May 19, 2018.
