A DRAFT letter on 1Malaysia Development Bhd addressed to former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail was among documents found in a safe in the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya, Malay Mail reports.
Also found in a police search at Najib Razak’s former office on Wednesday were other 1MDB documents, including one titled “Three Concerns on 1MDB”.
The letter to Gani was dated July 27, 2015 and titled “Investigations on 1MDB and other collateral issues to YBhg Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail”.
In 2015, allegations of corruption surfaced against Najib, who was prime minister and also finance minister and had oversight of 1MDB, involving funds transferred from a former 1MDB subsidiary to his bank accounts.
Gani had been leading a multi-agency task force in investigations into the matter but was abruptly replaced as attorney-general by Mohamed Apandi Ali, who was then a Federal Court judge.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said recently Gani had been preparing to charge Najib.
The Malay Mail said the draft letter and other 1MDB-related documents were found in a steel cabinet in the Prime Minister’s Office, in a room used by Najib’s former principal confidential secretary, Iskandar Mohd Kaus.
Police have so far raided Najib’s private residence in Taman Duta and condo units linked to an associate of his at Pavilion Residences.
The raid at the Pavilion Residences yielded 284 boxes of designer handbags and other bags stuffed with jewellery, cash and designer watches.
Najib has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing over 1MDB and was cleared by Apandi while in office.
The former prime minister will be questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday.
1MDB is also being investigated in several countries, with the US Department of Justice filing civil suits to recover US$1.7 billion in assets believed to be bought with stolen 1MDB funds. – May 19, 2018.
