PUTRAJAYA will discontinue another initiative introduced by former prime minister Najib Razak, Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) 2.0, targeting low-income households, The Malaysian Reserve reports.
The new government, led by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has also stopped the Jualan Sentuhan Rakyat (PJSR), a programme to sell household essentials at a discount.
Sighting an internal memo by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry, the report said a plan to introduce targeted fuel subsidies is being worked on.
“All programmes and suggestions by the previous leader that have not been implemented will be suspended,” the memo said, following the meeting with Dr Mahathir on Monday.
The previous administration set a target of 3,000 KR1M2.0 outlets by 2020. It was launched in February, a rebranding of the KR1M introduced since 2011.
The original scheme in 2011 was contracted to hypermarket retailer Mydin but ceased last September after suffering more than RM100 million in losses.
There are about 50 KR1M 2.0 operating in several states, including Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Negri Sembilan and Selangor.
PJSR, meanwhile, was held twice a month, offering various essential goods at prices 20% lower than the retail price.
The report also said contracts made through direct negotiations will also be terminated. – May 19, 2018.
