Putrajaya looking to abolish Printing Presses and Publications Act

The Malaysian Insight

THE Printing Presses and Publications Act will most likely be abolished to enable the print media to report freely, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“We may cancel the licensing system but we will have a set guidelines so that nobody can overstep the boundaries,” said the world’s oldest elected prime minister.

He said Pakatan Harapan (PH) wants to encourage media freedom but there has to be limitations.

“We want media freedom but every freedom has its limitations. There are no freedoms without limits,” said Dr Mahathir during a dialogue session with the PH media practitioners today.

He said the government is studying all the restrictions to media freedom but said freedoms without restrictions could be problematic in a multi-racial country.

“We can’t be allowing anyone to insult another person on the pretext of freedom of expression. That cannot be allowed,” he added.

On the other hand, Dr Mahathir said he is also against actions by the police to arrest a man in Langkawi for insulting him on Facebook.

“I have informed the police there. This law will be re-examined in Parliament when it convenes,” said Dr Mahathir on his Facebook.

He said if the complainant disagrees with what was posted on Facebook, he should rebut the points and not request the police to arrest the person. – May 18, 2018.
