All-night search of Najib's home yields handbags, apparel

AFTER eight hours, police searching the Taman Duta residence of Najib Razak have seized about three boxes of personal possessions, including a couple of handbags and some  clothing.

At 5.15am, police were still on the premises.

Najib’s lawyer, Harpal Singh Grewal said the former prime minister was being investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

“No charges were mentioned. Just investigation. Search was conducted under the money laundering act,” he said upon exiting Najib’s house.

Harpal confirmed police also combed through another property owned by Najib.

“But they found nothing incriminating on these premises,” he said.

He said police did not find any documents to implicate Najib or his wife, Rosmah Mansor but they seized handbags, apparel and some gifts. The search was taking all night because it was “a big house” and the police were scouring “every room”.

Najib and his family would not be arrested or further questioned for now.

“We have not been told anything of that sort. Not today. We have not received notification that they will do it,” Harpal said.

Sources raided five premises connected to Najib yesterday night. They said police were searching his former official residence Sri Perdana, his private residence in Taman Duta, two condominiums in Pavillion KL believed to belong to his family, and his former office in Putrajaya.

Najib’s lawyers were at the Taman Duta residence, where they had arrived shortly after the police.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigations Department director Amar Singh said the police visits were to search for evidence in an ongoing probe, but declined to say what they were searching for. – May 17, 2018.
