Reopen investigations into Taib, Sarawak PKR tells MACC

The Malaysian Insight

SARAWAK PKR chief Baru Bian today called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to reopen its investigations into Governor Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Baru said Sarawakians want to know what happened to the probes undertaken during Taib’s time as chief minister.

Taib, who held the chief minister’s post from 1981 to 2014, has been accused of awarding lucrative state contracts and timber concessions to his family and cronies while in office.

“It was revealed some years back that MACC had examined 500 files and opened at least 10 investigation papers following complaints linked to Taib,” said Baru.

“No results have been forthcoming. Sarawakians want to know what happened to the investigations, and we expect the authorities to walk the talk when it comes to the eradication of corruption and the prosecution of those involved, regardless of rank or position.”

He said corruption must be eradicated across the board, and not only when it has to do with 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

“Corruption has been rampant all over Malaysia, and Sarawak has not been spared. In fact, corruption in Sarawak is well documented and known worldwide.

“The authorities must leave no stone unturned in their investigations.”

He said there must also be investigations into other state politicians allegedly involved in corruption. – May 16, 2018.
