1MDB has more debts than Malaysians know about, says PM

The Malaysian Insight

1MALAYSIA Development Bhd has more debts than what has been revealed to the public, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today.

He said he has an idea of the amount of debt hidden from the public eye following briefings by police and Auditor-General Madinah Mohamad.

“I have been briefed by police and the auditor-general, and it’s clear that there were many more wrongdoings than what is known to the public and us.”

The Pakatan Harapan chairman said former prime minister Najib Razak’s administration did not admit to any wrongdoing involving 1MDB, whether locally or overseas.

“There was no admission from the Najib government that this money came from 1MDB. It was laundered.

“This money belongs to Malaysia, and it comes from 1MDB. We want the money back. It is a huge amount. It will help us solve debts.”

He said he will repatriate 1MDB funds from countries like the US, Switzerland and Singapore.

He said the government will repay 1MDB’s debts to avoid the administration going bankrupt.

“We have to (repay the debts). If it implicates the government, the government has to pay. Otherwise, we will go bankrupt.”

Dr Mahathir added that Najib, despite being disallowed from leaving the country, is not under house arrest because of his involvement in 1MDB. – May 16, 2018.
