I freed Anwar, says Dr Mahathir

The Malaysian Insight

DR Mahathir Mohamad said that he had kept his promise to free Anwar Ibrahim if Pakatan Harapan captured Putrajaya.

The prime minister said this in response to the overhanging accusation that Anwar was incarcerated because of him.

“Last time they said I was the one that put him in jail, now I am freeing him,” Dr Mahathir said to much mirth during a press conference today.

The 93-year old also said Anwar would not be involved in Putrajaya’s administration at the moment as he was “not yet a member of the government”.

Dr Mahathir said the PH presidential council would be evaluating Anwar’s position upon his release.

“I hope to have a meeting of presidential council tomorrow. They will decide for Anwar if there will be any changes.”

De facto PH leader Anwar was released today after a full pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Anwar was charged with sodomy in 2008. He was tried in 2010 and 2011 but was acquitted in 2012.

In March 2014, the acquittal was overturned and he was sentenced to a five-year jail term. – May 16, 2018.
