US orders seizure of Equanimity

THE United States courts ordered businessman Low Taek Jho to hand over the yacht, Equanimity, which was allegedly bought with money swindled from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), reported Bloomberg.

The financial newswire reported that US federal court judge Dale Fischer applied on Monday for a permit to seize the yacht.

“This is not a matter of the US government forcibly seizing property within a foreign country without the proper authority from that country’s government,” Fischer said.

Whichever party that is holding on to Equanimity now needs to hand it over to the US authorities or face consequences, he said.

The current Pakatan Harapan government led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad intends to seize all the assets to pay back the loans owed by 1MDB.

Last night, Auditor General Madinah Mohamad declassified the 1MDB report, which was under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).

Separately, Dr Mahathir held meetings with Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun, Chief of Justice Md Raus Sharif, and a few others, including former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail to discuss the 1MDB case. – May 16, 2018.
