Reforms committee to restore 'integrity' of Malaysian institutions

THE newly set up Institutional Reforms Committee will examine the key institutions of the country and then recommend necessary reforms to reinstate the integrity of these institutions, Bernama reports.

To this end, the committee said it would consult with the stakeholders, who would be invited to participation in the effort.

“We will then present the recommendations to the government through the Council (of Eminent Persons) with a view to reinstating the integrity of the institutions, and promote and enhance the rule of law,” the committee said in a statement.

It said governance structures had been gravely undermined and “our institutions have been prevented from functioning consistently with the laws of the country”.

“These shortcomings in the system need to be identified and addressed. It has also become imperative to appoint persons of unquestionable integrity to lead these institutions.”

The committee is chaired by retired judge K.C. Vohrah and its members are retired judge and Suhakam commissioner Mah Weng Kwai;  National Patriots Association president Brig-Gen (Rtd) Mohamed Arshad Raji; Professor of Law at University of Malaya, Emeritus Prof Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi; and National Human Rights Society (Hakam) president S. Ambiga.

The five-member committee was announced by earlier today by the Council of Eminent Persons, itself just three days old, being established on May 12 to advise the government on economic and financial matters. – May 15, 2018.
