“We think that within a short while we will have a case against him, we will be able to charge him,” he said speaking via video conference to the Wall Street Journal CEO Council Meeting in Tokyo.

Dr Mahathir said that it was not easy investigating Najib was he was protected by the people close to him.

“Those who were with him and took his side – we don’t know who will be loyal to the government (and to him).”

Dr Mahathir said he would not strike a deal with Najib even if he offered to recover funds that were allegedly misappropriated.

Gani was heading the task force investigating the 1MDB scandal when he was replaced by Mohamed Apandi Ali.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has launched a criminal investigation into alleged siphoning of 1MDB funds, subsequent to filing civil suits to forfeit more than US$1 billion (RM4.3 billion) in real estate and other assets allegedly bought with stolen money. – May 15, 2018.
