Work to remove GST has begun, says Zeti

WORK has begun to remove the goods and services tax (GST) and there is no turning back, former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz said today.

“It’s (the decision to abolish GST) final and work is in progress towards the abolishment,” Bernama quoted Zeti as saying today.

Zeti was recently appointed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to the Council of Elders and she was at the Finance Ministry with two other members of the council today morning to discuss the GST and other economic matters.

Abolishing the GST was a key campaign promise in Pakatan Harapan’s GE14 manifesto.

Zeti, who was BNM governor for 16 years, said measures taken to fix the economy will be done in an orderly and transparent manner.

“We will announce what we are going to do, including the strategy, process, technology, system and we will get it approved in Parliament,” she said. – May 15, 2018.
