BARISAN Nasional’s defeat in the May 9 polls shows that race and religion are no longer issues to the people, Penang Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) leaders said.
Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Zairil Khir Johari said BN’s racial threats no longer worked in Malaysia after the old ruling coalition was ousted.
“At last, we can build a nation for all Malaysians,” he told a crowd of thousands at a PH thanksgiving mega-ceramah at the Esplanade tonight.
Permatang Pasir assemblyman Faiz Fadzil said PH’s victory in the general election showed that Malaysians united to reject racial and religious sentiments played up by BN.
“On May 9, there was no Malay, Chinese or Indian tsunami. It was a Malaysian tsunami,” he said.
Faiz said this also meant the Islamist party PAS should not stir up such sentiments.
“PAS cannot help Umno any more. PAS should not try to play with racial and religious sentiments.
“The people are matured. They will not support political parties that stir up such issues any more,” he said.
In the recently concluded GE14, BN only managed to win 79 parliamentary seats, compared with PH’s 122. PAS won 18. – May 14, 2018.
