ANWAR Ibrahim’s pardon process might be delayed, according to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said the Pakatan Harapan government had already applied to release Anwar but the process was pending for now.
“Our promise to get a pardon for Anwar will continue, but the process needs be followed.
“Even though it was agreed upon, the pardons committee meeting may be delayed because we want to follow the rules,” Dr Mahathir said in a press conference at Putrajaya today.
The 93-year old said he had not heard any updates from Anwar after meeting with him two days ago.
Dr Mahathir also said that the PH government would follow the “rule of law” no matter the circumstances.
“This government will follow the rule of law in carrying out our duty. We will not run away from the legal process,” he said.
Anwar’s wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail confirmed that he would be released tomorrow after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong agreed to a full pardon.
De facto PH leader Anwar has been serving a five-year sentence since 2013 for allegedly committing sodomy. – May 14, 2018.
