ATTORNEY-General Mohamed Apandi Ali is set to go on leave, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today.
He said the solicitor general would assume Apandi’s duties for now.
“There is a problem with the A-G. He will be on leave, and his duties will be taken over by the solicitor-general,” Dr Mahathir said in a press conference.
“There have been many complaints against the A-G. He will be given a holiday on that basis.”
Dr Mahathir also said there has so far been no formal complaints lodged against Apandi.
“We have to make a police report and certain reports before investigations can be carried out.
“At this moment we don’t have a formal report even though there are many accusations against him,” he said.
Dr Mahathir also said a royal commission of inquiry into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) will be carried out once there are concrete charges.
Apandi replaced the previous attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail in 2015 amid an ongoing probe into 1MDB.
Apandi, a former federal court judge, subsequently said then prime minister Najib Razak, who is implicated in 1MDB’s scandals, had not done anything wrong. – May 14, 2018.
